The Edmonton Oilers were originally supposed to be called the Edmonton Gulf Oilers and their logo was going to be similar to the Gulf logo. That deal eventually fell through and the current logo was then designed.

It was the name chosen by Bud Adams when he founded the team in 1960; the name stayed when the team moved to Tennessee until after 1998 Adams petitioned the NFL to retire the name - thus Houston's present NFL team cannot use the name Oilers.
