That nickname was given to the Denver Broncos 3-4 defense of the 70s (back when bright orange was the team's primary color), mainly for their ability to stop the running game of their opponents (ranked #1 against the run in the 1977 season). The key players on the Orange Crush defense included Randy Gradishar and Tom Jackson (yes, the current analyst), Lyle Alzado, Rubin Carter, Joe Rizzo, Billy Thompson, Bob Swenson and Louis Wright.
