Makem is a contraction of the local pronunciation of "Make them".

According to our neighbours north of the Tyne (who's own dialect provides us with much amusement) we don't "Make them and take them" we "Mak'em and Tak'em".

So this is more of an insult (that we have endured and accepted because of popular usage) than a self adopted title.
