New York Yankees 49The first baseball team to use numbers on uniforms was the 1916 Cleveland Indians when they wore small numbers on the sleeves of their uniforms, as a way of identifying the players. This practice was short lived.

in 1929 the New York Yankees decided to wear numbers to the backs of their jerseys. The numbers corresponded to each player's general position in the lineup.for example Babe Ruth wore No. 3, since he usually batted third, and Lou Gehrig wore No. 4 as he batted fourth.

Number 49 was retired by the New York Yankees for pitcher Ron Guidry. Guidry wore the number from 1975-1988 as a player, and in both 2006-2007as a coach. Here is a list of New York Yankee players that wore uniform number 49.

On player of note that wore number 46 as a Rookie was Don Mattingly. High number are given to rookies, and player that might not be with the team long. Some players keep the number for their career. Mattingly stuck with the Majors but not with the number. He finished his career as number 23. Here is a list of Yankee players that wore uniform number 46.
