99 is the number worn by Mark Gastineau with the 1984 New York Jets. Mark Gastineau was one of the fiercest DL in NFL history. He was well known for his crazy celebrations after sacking a quarterback.

Mark Gastineau is the most famous to wear the number. Since then it's been worn by Bryan Thomas who in turn sold the number to Jason Taylor when he came to town from Miami. Blechhh. Since Jason Taylor has left, no one has worn the number (I think). I think Thomas should take it back, but knowing him (very humble dude) he's not about recognition and probably hasn't even thought about it.
