There was no Super Bowl in 1958. The game was introduced in 1966, as a competitition between the AFL and the NFL. The NFL Championship for the 1958 season was won by the Baltimore Colts, who beat the New York Giants 23-17 in overtime. The game was played in Yankee Stadium, NYC, on December 28, 1958. It was the first NFL game decided in sudden-death overtime. NFL Hall of Fame QB Johnny Unitas led the Colts, and Raymond Berry caught an NFL Championship record 12 passes. Playing for New York were the later television icons Frank Gifford and Pat Summerall. THe Colts also beat the Giants the following season, 31-17.

Much like how the College Football National Championship is awarded, the Akron Pros were awarded the league title in a league meeting in April of 1921. The APFA became the NFL in 1922.
