Junior running back Herschel Walker of Georgia won the 1982 Heisman Trophy over Stanford quarterback John Elway, 1,926 votes to 1,231. Walker was the 1981 Heisman runner up to Southern Cal running back Marcus Allen. He also finished third in 1980, behind South Carolina running back George Rogers and Pitt defensive lineman Hugh Green.
Running back John David Crow of Texas A&M was the 1957 Heisman Trophy winner.

The Heisman Trophy was first awarded in 1935. It was established to recognize the most outstanding player in college football in the United States. The trophy is named after John Heisman, a former college football player and coach. Since its inception, it has become one of the most prestigious awards in American sports.
As of October 2023, Stanford University has produced two Heisman Trophy winners: Jim Plunkett, who won the award in 1970, and John Elway, who was a finalist but did not win. The only official Heisman winner from Stanford is Jim Plunkett.
