The NHL began play in the 1917-1918 season with four teams, not two. They were the Montreal Canadiens, the Montreal Wanderers, the Ottawa Senators and the Toronto Arenas. The Quebec Bulldogs were also considered charter members of the NHL, although they were not able to begin playing until the 1918-1919 season. The opening game, on December 19, 1917 was a 7-4 victory for the Montreal Canadiens over the Ottawa Senators.
