The first four African American Basketball players to play for the University of Kentucky were Nate Northington, Tom Payne, and two others, who joined the team in the 1969-1970 season. Nate Northington made history as the first African American to compete for the Wildcats in a varsity game. Their participation marked a significant step toward integration in College Basketball at the university.
