Kinnick was student body president his senior year at Iowa and he was in a popular fraternity at Iowa. Nile posted a 3.4 GPA in economics, he was Phi Beta Kappa and graduated "with distinction", Iowa's equivalent to graduating cum laude. He gave the commencement speech for the University of Iowa's graduating class in 1940. Kinnick rejected professional football. He was drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers. He entered the University of Iowa law school and ranked third in his class.Kinnick, grandson of a governor, spoke before Republicans and introduced 1940 presidential candidate Wendell Willkie at a campaign rally. But Kinnick left law school after one year and enlisted in the Naval Air Reserve. He was called to active duty three days before the attack on Pearl Harbor. He died at age 24 in an airplane accident. His body was never recovered. He was as pure a student/athlete as there has ever been in College Football history.
