I think you mean the World Cup 1998, held in France. The opening goal was scored by Cesar Sampaio of Brazil from a corner, against Scotland in the opening match. Brazil won the game 2-1. John Collins equalised for Scotland from the spot but Tommy Boyd scored an own goal to hand the defending champions the win.
