However, for the Yankees teams between Mattingly's and Jeter's time as captain, the 'unofficial' captain was considered to be Paul O'Neill.

Jeter took over at shortstop in the 1996 season. Fernandez started 103 games at shortstop in 1995, his only season with the team. Kevin Elster also played shortstop for the 1995 Yankees.
