The last Boston Bruins player to win the MVP award was Phil Esposito in the 1973-1974 season. Joe Thornton had won the award in the 2005-2006 season but he was a member of the San Jose Sharks when he had won it. Thornton was traded halfway through the season to the Sharks and then proceeded to win the MVP award.
