The original AFL was the American Football League. It began in 1960 with eight teams - the Boston Patriots, Buffalo Bills, New York Titans, Houston Oilers, Dallas Texans, Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Chargers, and Oakland Raiders - a team in Minnesota was scheduled for the league as well but potential owners of the team switched to the NFL at the last hour. In 1966 the Miami Dolphins debuted and the Cincinnati Bengals debuted in 1968. The league merged into the NFL in 1970.
