Montana was selected by the 49ers with the 82nd overall choice in the 1979 NFL draft. The player selected 81st was center Mike Wellman from Kansas by the Los Angeles Rams. Wellman played two seasons in the NFL (1979-1980) with the Green Bay Packers, primarily on special teams.

Two future Hall of Famers were selected ahead of Montana in 1979 ... DL Dan Hampton was selected 4th overall by the Chicago Bears and TE Kellen Winslow was the 13th overall selection by the San Diego Chargers.

There were some other pretty good players selected ahead of Montana ... Phil Simms, Ottis Anderson, Al Harris, Marty Lyons, Dan Ross, Fred Smerlas, Mark Gastineau, and Tony Nathan.

Co-author of 'The Catch', WR Dwight Clark, was selected 249th overall by the 49ers in 1979.
