It was Southern Mississippi in 2005. With Alabama trailing 21-10, senior quarterback Brodie Croyle completed a fourth-and-12 pass from the USM 43-yard line to Prothro with 17 seconds left in the first half. Prothro's unbelievable catch gave Alabama a first-and-goal at the Southern Miss one-yard line and set up Croyle's one-yard TD pass to Le'Ron McClain as UA cut the halftime deficit to 21-17. The Crimson Tide won the game 30-21 as they scored 20 unanswered points after falling behind 21-10 in the second quarter.

Prothro suffered a complete fracture of both major bones (tibia and fibula) of his lower left leg against the University of Florida on October 1, 2005, ending his junior season. He was still named a part of the All-SEC Team despite his injury.
