In this season, Spurs had one of the worst sanctions for financial irregulations committed. They were first deducted £600,000, deducted 12 points in the League and banned from that years FA Cup. Chairman Alan Sugar challenged the clubs sanctions in court. The fine was increased to £1.5 Million, but they were allowed to participate in the FA Cup and were deducted 0 points. Ossie was sacked when Spurs lost 3-1 to Notts County in the League Cup. His successor was QPR manager Gerry Francis. Gerry got Spurs a 7th place finish, the highest finish for 5 years. He also got them to the FA Cup semi-final, but Tottenhams Wembley dreams came crashing down after loosing 4-1 to Everton.
At the end of the season, due to financial difficulties, Tottenham were made to sell their top goalscorer (30 Goals, in all comps) and FWA Player of the Year Juregen Klinsmann. £1.5 million to Bayern Munich. Tottenham also paid out £4.5 million to Crystal Palaces Chris Armstrong. But was deemed as a "waste of money" only scoring 9 all season.
Tottenham also saw the departure of Nick Barmby and Gheorghe Popescu, forcing francis to re-organize midfield.
