Douglas most likely makes the best youth shoulder pads but they are heavy and extremely expensive. I am an ex pro football player and I used Riddell "Power" pads in college and the pros. When I researched looking for a youth comparison I found the Riddell EVX which to me looks and feels similar to my old "powers." My son loves his. So for the money pick Riddell EVX but if you are rich go with Douglas.
Shoulder pads have a lot of different features and benefits. Some have more padding and some have more "secure" clasping mechanisms to provide a tighter more secure feeling. Ultimately most important thing is that you are FITTED correctly!

Riddell's are good, but they are better at Helmets. Schutt and Adams are the leading shoulder pad makers. I use Schutt Flex pads. They are awesome! My opinion: Go with schutt.
