As a pro road cyclist lets get down to brass tax here and set the record straight. I have held a UCI (Union Cycling International) Professional license for the last 3 years with Continental teams racing events like the Tour of California, Philadelphia International Cycling Classic, Tour de Beauce and the Herald Sun Tour in Australia and many other events across the United States. In three years my contracts have totaled a whopping $5000. I have made roughly $1500 in prize money during this time and with no medical benefits. I pay roughly $150 per month in health insurance. To put this into more perspective I have spent at least $3000 at bike shops on parts and such to keep my equipment running. Here is the biggie though, my medical bills had I not paid my own insurance would have totaled just about $45,000 for ER and OR and other hospital related visits as a result of racing injuries. For 2010 there were 140 professional American road cyclist and 27 of them are on teams with a minimum salary of 27,500 Euros. The remaining 113 riders are on team that are not required to pay a salary.
