For years, the Dallas Cowboys' Thanksgiving Day opponent pretty much depended on which network televised the game. FOX, the network of the National Football Conference, and CBS, which focuses on American Football Conference games, usually have alternated their November holiday schedules every year.

The same formula also was true for the early Thanksgiving Day game hosted by the Detroit Lions. If FOX televised the early game, then CBS got the late afternoon game in Dallas.
