As of the end of July 2013, the England Cricket Board has designated the following captains for international competition.

  • Alastair Cook captains both England's Test and ODI teams. He has been ODI captain on and off since 2009 and assumed Test captaincy after Andrew Strauss retired from the sport in 2012 (Cook was previously vice-captain).
  • For Twenty20 International, there have been several captains in recent years, including Stuart Broad, Greame Swann, Eoin Morgan, and most recently James Tredwell.

NOTE: Captaincy is not a hard and fast position in the sport of cricket, and temporary captaincies have occurred in the past due to injury or to provide experience for maturing players. The shorter and less prestigious the format, the more mercurial a captaincy is likely to be.
