Arsenal's only new signing in the 2009 transfer window is the agile left-footed centre back,Thomas Vermaelen. Thomas recently had a successful time at Ajax, playing their for 6 years and eventually captaining their side at only 23 years of age. Arsenal signed the Belgian for 10 million Euros, on the 19th of June, 2009. However this fee increased to 12 Million Euros 3 days later.

Arsenal have been linked with moves for many players to replace the flops that have been released this season. The Gunners have already signed France international Yaya Sanogo and have agreed a fee with German club Freiberg for starlet Matthis Ginter. However, there are other targets in mind to challenge for the title.

1. Ashley Williams

The Welsh rock in defence has reached his peak point and helped Swansea to win the League Cup last season. In pre-season, Gunners skipper Vermalean picked up an injury which will keep him out for roughly 3 months so with the signing of the 27 year old centre-back, Arsenal can tidy up their back four.

2. Luis Suarez

Arsenal need a big money signing as they have £70 million to spend on superstars. Olivier Giroud has not shown Arsene Wenger what he has got this season so the world class Uruaguyan, Luis Suarez, could be on his way to North London. With 26 goals last season he can lead Arsenal to a lot of sucsess.

3. Julio Cesar

He was on the verge of joining Napoli until the Italian side refused to pay the veteran's wages at the last minute. Since then, only The Gunners have been intrested in the Brazillian Shot-stopper this Summer. Arsenal keeper Szczezny could do with some competition, So this may mean that the chance is there for the 33 year old to move across town to The Emirates from Championship side QPR.
