Lewis Rober, Sr. used the empty lot next to his firehouse to create a softball diamond. He first thought of it because he needed something to keep his firemen busy. He developed the game completely separately than George Hancock, probably. However, softball was first move outdoors by George Hancock, not Lewis Rober.
Softball developed as a younger version of Baseball. Softball was started by elements of other sports of which were boating, boxing and football. A boating club, a boxing glove and a football game were key parts in the very first game of softball.
Invented? Well, softball is simply the female version of baseball. No huge difference. Just the pitchers, the glove, and the ball and the obvious, it's a girls sport. Apparently, who ever invented or developed softball, thought females shouldn't be allowed to play with males, so established a new sport. More intense and difficult in certain cases.
