In indoor and Field Hockey, only a player with goalkeeping priveleges may use the feet; any other use will be penalised. In Ice Hockey, any player may use their skates to stop the ball (or puck as is the case).

The goalie
No. Only a player with goalkeeping priveleges may use their feet or body to stop the ball, and only within their defensive circle. Players must use their stick otherwise.
The back in hockey defends. They stop the hockey ball from going inside the goal. Just like the goal keeper. But if the backs stop the ball from going to near the D, they are good backs.
Field Hockey Field are flat to ensure that the ball can not roll in any direction unless it is moved by the players and to make it safe for players. if the ground was uneven it would be dangerous for the players to hit the ball incase the ball hit a bump in the grass or astroturf and was lifted into the air and hit a player.
It depends on whether you are playing field, ice or indoor hockey, on what surface, whether the ball/puck is skipping or rolling/sliding and many other things.

Making the ball go to a dead stop with your feet.
you will have to trap the ball many times during a game. If someone hits you the ball you don't always want to sweep it, you have to stop it and bring it into yourself so you can start to do light dribbles. You don't use this for when you know you have to hit the ball and when you pull it to yourself, don't hit your feet!
ball stop in lacrosse is a piece of foam material that has an adhesive on one side that allows it to stick to the throat area of the lacrosse head. the ball stop allows players to catch passes and have the ball not bounce off of the bottom plastic.
Sliding friction in field hockey is demonstrated when the player's feet slide on the ground as they change direction or come to a sudden stop. This friction helps players control their movements on the field by providing resistance against the sliding motion. The type of shoes worn by field hockey players, with studs or cleats, also play a role in enhancing sliding friction for better traction on the field.
I do not see how it will stop you from being a good footballer.
