As of 2009, there have been 17 perfect games in MLB history; all of them by different pitchers. A perfect game occurs when a pitcher retires all 27 batters without allowing anyone on base for any reason at all.
No-hitters are a bit more common. Since 1875, there have been 256 no-hitters in the MLB. A no-hitter is different from a perfect game. Errors, walks, hit batters, and fielder's choices can occur. As long as nothing is recorded as an official hit, the no-hitter remains intact.
Great answer. The finest perfect game was probably the only one thrown in a World Series, the 1956 gem tossed by Don Larsen of the New York Yankees against a very talent-laden Brooklyn Dodgers team that included sluggers Duke Snider, Carl Furillo, Jackie Robinson and Gil Hodges.
The greatest pitching feat is arguably the back-to-back no-hitters thrown by Johnny van der Meer in 1939 (I think), though they weren't exactly the finest no hitters. Van der Meer didn't have the greatest control and so walked a number of batters enroute to his record making achievement.
Johnny Vander Meer of the Cincinnati Reds threw no hitters in consecutive starts in 1938. He no-hit the Boston Braves on June 11 and the Brooklyn Dodgers on June 15. He is the only MLB pitcher to throw no hitters in consecutive starts.
Through the 2008 season:
1) Randy Johnson - pitched no hitters for the Seattle Mariners (AL) on June 2, 1990 and the Arizona Diamondbacks (NL) on May 18, 2004. The no hitter for the Diamondbacks was a perfect game.
2) Hideo Nomo - pitched no hitters for the Los Angeles Dodgers (NL) on September 16, 1996 and the Boston Red Sox (AL) on April 4, 2001.
3) Nolan Ryan - pitched no hitters for the California Angels (AL) on May 15, 1973, July 16, 1973, September 28, 1974, and June 1, 1975 and the Houston Astros (NL) on September 26, 1981 and Texas Rangers (AL) on June 11, 1990 and May 1, 1991.
4) Jim Bunning - pitched no hitters for the Detroit Tigers (AL) on July 20, 1958 and Philadelphia Phillies (NL) on June 21, 1964. The no hitter for the Phillies was a perfect game.
5) Cy Young - pitched no hitters for the Cleveland Spiders (NL) on September 18, 1897 and Boston Americans (AL) on May 5, 1904 and June 30, 1908. The no hitter for the Americans in 1904 was a perfect game.
That is Nolan Ryan of the Texas Rangers who was 44 years old when he no hit the Toronto Blue Jays, winning 3-0, on May 1, 1991.
