Rugby was first started by a boy called web Ellis who when playing football with his friend s at a school in a place called rugby picked up the ball ran the lenght of the field and put the ball down on the opposite goal line andd the head teacher who was watching said "well that's not not a goal but it was a bloody great try!" that's how rugby first started then it was taken up by other schools/places and eventually got turnd into a sport but didnt have many rules at the time and i think big English schools like cambridge developed some rules and always played by them
