In 1823 William Web Ellis a 17 year old student of Rugby School Warwickshire England whilst playing Football (Soccer) picked up the ball (which was allowed in the game at that time) and instead of running back toward team mates as was the rule to make a pass carried on running forward toward the opposing goal line.
