Its a bit of a vague question. In terms of viewing popularity, the world cup is way behind the Olympics, the football world cup and, I imagine, the tour de France, but next on the list. In playing popularity, it very far down with sports like cricket, skiing and cycling featuring higher on people's 'hobby' list. Generally it is not massively popular but has a very loyal following as a sport, with the fans playing as well as watching until relatively late in their lives.
