Princeton graduate Thomas Peebles introduced the idea of organized crowds cheering at football games to the University of Minnesota. However, it was not until 1898 that University of Minnesota student Johnny Campbell directed a crowd in cheering "Rah, Rah, Rah! Sku-u-mar, Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah! Varsity! Varsity! Varsity, Minn-e-So-Tah!”, making Campbell the very first cheerleader
According to academics.uof.edu:
" People displayed the idea of cheerleading in their actions since ancient times. In ancient Greece, spectators would cheer for runners in races held during the first Olympic Games. The idea of cheerleading spread to the United States around the 1860's when students in Great Britain began cheering at competitive sporting events. In 1865, the first pep club was established at Princeton University.
The first ever cheerleader, Johnny Campbell, another noted person for aiding in the development of cheerleading in the United States through the years is Lawrence Herkimer. Herkimer held the first and second cheerleading clinics in 1946 and 1947, founded the National Cheerleading Association at Southern Methodist University, and taught the first cheerleading camp at Sam Houston College. He invented a very popular cheerleading jump, which was named the herkie named after him. Cheerleading started out with men only and is now dominated by women. It wasn't until after awhile men had to go and fight in World War II that the sport became dominated by women. Today a lot more men are becoming interested by this sport. In our world today people accuse men that are cheerleaders, being gay just because they are participating in a female sport. Cheerleaders today appreciate the male cheerleaders for their strength so they can accomplish the harder stunts to get them noticed or recognized.
There have been so many changes in cheerleading history today. Cheerleaders have begun to cheer for several sports, including basketball, wrestling, Track and Field, swimming, and baseball. Today, cheerleading is mostly performed for the two well-known sports, football and basketball. It is also performed competitively by numerous squads, in which cheerleading teams make routines and compete against each other at competitions. In addition, there are different levels of cheerleading teams for competitions and sports, unlike several years ago when cheerleading was only performed at the College Sports games. There are youth cheerleading, all-star cheerleading (consists of all ages, distinguishing people by their abilities rather than by age), high school cheerleading, and college cheerleading.

Cheerleading started as organized crowd chants. A group of guys started yelling chants in hope of helping raise their team's spirits. Eventually other people started joining in. Then in games after that one, the group of guys began standing in front of the crowd, yelling their chants, and Cheer Leading was born. Cheerleading has evolved over the ages, and if you would like to learn more about the progression of cheerleading you can alway research it.
It literally means what it says. Cheerleading is the action for leading cheers
