The game of American football has been played since the mid-1800's. By the 1940s, flag football was all the rage on U.S. military bases as servicemen chose up sides and played against each other. Since America could not send football-battered soldiers into combat, tackling a ball carrier to stop him was replaced with the safer practice of grabbing a flag attached to his clothing. When the flag was taken, the player was stopped. -AJ

Flag football was started as a way to practice tackle football without the tackling. It became popular during World War II as a way for military personnel to get exercise and have fun without the dangers of tackling. Flag football was first started by the US Military in the 1940s. In the 1950s, recreational leagues were started by some of the same people who played the game while in the service.
