Tampa Bay first got a professional baseball team in 1998 when the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (now known as the Tampa Bay Rays) were established as an expansion team in Major League Baseball. The team played its first game on March 31, 1998. Prior to the Rays, the region had minor league teams, but the Devil Rays marked the area’s entry into Major League Baseball.
