Peach Baskets were used in the trial games at the Springfield Y.M.C.A. in l89l under the direction of James Naismith. Initially Soccer Balls were used before the standard and familiar orange ball was developed. By the way Soccer Balls were used for passing practice (Not actual play) by Church-League amateur cagers as late as the thirties such as the Bergen Point Baptist team in Bayonne. My dad played for this squad and they were just Basketball players. Few were affiliated with the church, and in fvact dad was a Lutheran. so it goes. By this time the net baskets were standard.

When people started playing basketball they were using a soccer ball and a peach basket. When or if they made it in they would have to clime up something and get the ball out everytime, but then they decided to put a hole in the basket so that the ball would drop through.
I hope this is helpful
it was a used by the Inca's in South America. They would play basketball as a war game and the losers head was chopped off. The head was then used by the winners team for their next game. The more heads you had the more powerful you were.
