The name 'Argonauts' goes back thousands of years, to pre-historic times, to the days of ancient Greek mythology. The rowing club formed a football team in 1873, as a way to keep their rowers in shape during the off-season. The Argonaut Rowing Club owned the Toronto Argonaut football team until the mid-1950s.
