Ernie played for the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues in 1950. After spending the next two years in the United States Army, he returned to the Monarchs in 1953 and played with them until his contract was bought by the Chicago Cubs late in the season. Ernie played with the Cubs until he retired after the 1971 season.
