Points for a try were originally 3 and a converstion 2
Penalties kicked were if my memory serves was 3. The IRB noted that the scores fronm the boot was greatly increasing whilt tries were dropping. This devalued the entertainment factor and caused the runnig game to become more like a tennis match with the ball be kicked at every occasion. The try value was increase to force greater running and end game scores . That is why bonus points are given for high try scoring games
March 1893 RFU & WRU raised a try from two to three points. The value of the conversion was also changed from three to two points, meaning that the value of a converted try remains five points. IRFB adopt this scheme the following year, 1894.
