This depends on how badly you have jammed it. Usually if you can still get movement out of you finger you caan immediately return to your sport but you may want to tape it or get a splint. If you can't get any movement out of your finger I suggest going and getting X-rays because it may be fractured or even broken. Hope this helps! :)
Basketball players do it all the time. It is perfectly fine to do so.However, if the finger is your fore-finger, it may be tough. Shooting, passing, and most other actions other than just defending involve the fore-finger.
I used to play basketball and have jammed each of my fingers several times. Usually my coach would pull the finger out if it had not repaired itself. Then I would tape the finger (individually for my thumb) and then apply ice. My mom looked it up online and I still have the link which provides a more "medical" approach to it though... http://www.sportsinjurybulletin.com/archive/finger-injuries.html
