It is recorded as being conceived more by accident than design in Rugby School, Warwichshire, England in 1823 when student William Web Ellis playing football (soccer) picked up the ball, which in those days was allowed and ran forward with it toward the opposing goals. This was not allowed as the ball carrier had to retire toward their own team to make a pass running forwards was not allowed carrying the ball. This caught on and the rest as they say is history
