No one really knows. Century scores were uncommon before the late 19th century because the wickets were very rough and unprepared. The main claiment for the first recorded century is John Minshull playing for Dorset against Wrotham at Sevenoaks in England in 1769 ( quoted by G.B.Buckley in a book from 1935).

The first recorded century in a major match was by John Small playing for Hampshire against Surrey on Broadhalfpenny Down in July 1775 ( quoted by Arthur Haygarth, scores and biographies vol 1, published 1862)

The first test century was scored by Charles Bannerman playing for Australia in the first ever test match, England v Australia 1877. He scored 165 retired hurt.
