The concept was created by William Webb Ellis a student of Rugby School Warwickshire. England in 1823. When during a game of Football (the earliest version of soccer) Web Ellis picked up the ball and instead of running backward which in those days was allowed in the rules of football, he ran forward. From here the concept of carrying the ball forward and passing backward continued as more students took to this new idea. The idea travelled with the students as they left the school and went to university etc where as the game grew and developed
