Basketball was invented by a gym teacher in Massachusetts in 1891. It was originally played using peach baskets and a soccer ball, evolving later into the sport as it is played today.
Start both sand clocks off at the same time. When the 7-minute clock runs out turn it over. When the 11-minute clock runs out turn it over. START TIMING. When the 7-minute clock next runs out it will have been 3 minutes.
I think it was in 1987 when the 3-point shot was introduced...
An analog clock is a clock with numbers in a circle and a minute and hour hand to tell the time.
No it does not preclude you from using an electronic hand time clock.
They stopped using the soccer ball, and used a larger ball for basketball in 1894.

9 plus 4 equals 1 in the 12 hour clock. If you start at 9am in the morning, and add 4 hours too the 9, you get an answer of 1 if you count using the 12 hour clock.
Some people have used it for many many years. Most still use the 12 hour clock, although for some special applications they might use the 24 h version.
