In their inaugural season of 1960, the expansion team Cowboys lost their first 10 games before tying the New York Giants 31-31 in Week 11. The 1988 Cowboys, who finished the season with a 3-and-13 record, matched the 10-game loss streak in what turned out be Tom Landry's swan song as head coach.

There are many candidates for this one, particularly because the Cowboys struggled and failed to win championships in the late 1960s and early 1970s. But a strong candidate for the most difficult loss would be the National Football Conference Championship Game on January 10, 1982 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.

Dallas led the San Francisco 49ers 27-21 late in the fourth quarter, but Niners quarterback Joe Montana guided his team from their own 11 to the Cowboys 6-yard line with 58 seconds left. Montana then threw a high pass to the back of the end zone, which was caught for a go-ahead touchdown by San Francisco wide receiver Dwight Clark. The play has been known as "The Catch" ever since.

What many people don't remember is that the Cowboys had a chance to pull off a last-second victory. With 51 seconds remaining, Dallas needed only a field goal to win. Dallas quarterback Danny White threw a pass to wide receiver Drew Pearson, who seemed headed for a long gainer. But second-year Niners defensive back Eric Wright thwarted a big play, pulling Pearson down by his jersey. A few moments later, White fumbled after being hit, and the 49ers recovered the ball, securing a 28-27 victory.

The loss effectively ended the Cowboys' dominance in the NFC for a decade. They would not appear in another conference championship game and Super Bowl until January 1993. Meanwhile, the 49ers became one of the glamour teams of the National Football League. They went on to win four Super Bowls between 1982 and 1990, and a fifth in January 1995.
