Rhode Islands professional football team was called the Providence Steam Roller. The Grid Iron Gang from Providence played from 1925-1931 and finished with a 41-32-11 win/loss/tie record.
In 1928 the Steam Rollers won their first and only League Championship, going 8-1-2 for the season. The Steam Rollers hold the distinction of being the first Professional Football franchise in New England to win a Championship. In addition, they hold the dubious distinction of being the last team to win a Championship to no longer exist.
