His childhood was extremely difficult, and athletics were his only escape. His mother had him when she was 15 and struggled to make ends meat working odd jobs to pay the bills. His father was in prison. He lived in a tiny house in Hampton, Virginia with 19 other people, including his younger sisters, uncles, and other family members. There was often raw sewage flooding the house. Frequently they had no light, electricity, or water. His youngest sister, Iiesha, had severe seizures since birth that only got worse due to their living conditions and inability to afford a specialist. One of Allen's friends was murdered in front of him when he was eight-years-old. By the time he was 15, seven other friends or family members had been murdered. There were many days growing up when the only meal he had for the day was a lunch his coach gave him. Some days he went without food. He became the man of the house by age 12, and took care of his sick little sister. He missed a lot of school because his mom was working so he had to maintain the house and babysit. As a minor, Allen was sent to adult prison for his part in a fight (that turned into a brawl) where he served 4 months before Governor Wilder granted him clemency. The Virginia Court of Appeals later overturned his conviction for lack of evidence. Many witnesses reported that Allen had left the Bowling alley when he realized the fight was turning into a brawl. Although white and black kids had equally antagonized and injured each other during the brawl, only black kids had been arrested days later, including Allen - who the entire town happened to know because he was a star athlete.
