Though the figures aren't exact and can only go from media reports/speculation, a number of NUFC players are on very high wages, by premier league standards, nevermind Championship ones.

In order to cut the wagebill, top earners were allowed to leave in the summer. These include Obafemi Martins (£80kpw), Habib Beye (£40kpw), Damien Duff (£80kpw), Michael Owen (£110kpw) and Mark Viduka (£90kpw).

They are still however left with a number of players still earning over £50k per week.

Fabricio Coloccini, Joey Barton, Geremi (reported to be leaving), Alan Smith, Nicky Butt (contract expiring at the end of the season) and Xisco (out on loan to Racing Santander) are all believed to be earning £50k or above.

The remainder of the squad are said to be paid around £20-30k with younger players earning considerably less (Danny Simpson on £15kpw during his loan for example).

A recent statement from NUFC chairman Mike Ashley states he wishes to limit any future player wages to £30kpw, still far above the average in the Championship but more in line with lower-mid-table Premier League clubs, where Newcastle United are aiming to be next season.
