Jesse James rode with Quantrill's Raiders, a paramilitary guerilla group of Confederate sympathizers who pillaged and killed along the Kansas and Missouri border towns. After learning his trade with Quantrill, he and his brother along with their cousins continued in this occupation after the war. They specialized in banks and trains.
The St. Albans Raid occurred on October 19, 1864, during the American Civil War, when a group of Confederate raiders, led by Colonel John Singleton Mosby, attacked the town of St. Albans, Vermont. The raid aimed to create a diversion and disrupt Union resources by looting banks and stores. The raiders managed to steal around $200,000 before escaping back to Canada, despite efforts by local militia and law enforcement to apprehend them. This audacious attack marked the northernmost incursion of the Civil War and heightened tensions in the region.
General Grant had ordered General Thomas in Nashville in 1864 to attack the Confederates led by General John Bell Hood. When Thomas refused to advance, Grant considered replacing him with General Schofield.
The Battle of Cold Harbor in early June, 1864 was one battle in the so-called "Overland Campaign". The battle was an attempt by General Grant to dislodge General Lee's troops which were intrenched in defensive positions. Grant ordered his soldiers to attack the Confederates. In about twenty minutes 7,000 Union soldiers fell(killed and wounded). This attack was the only one that Grant later said he regretted ordering.
