Actually, Deer Trail, Colorado held a rodeo contest 20 years before Pecos' event. Colorado Joint Resolution #1025 declared Deer Trail the Home of the World's First Rodeo. The event was held on July 4, 1869.

It's not exactly known, since many cities in several states claim to have the oldest rodeo, but I would say Arizona.

The oldest boasting rodeo is Prescott Frontier Days. The history of rodeo is said to begin in Deer Trail CO, when two neighboring ranches got together to see who could do everyday raching tasks the best.

Early rodeo-like affairs of the 1820s and 1830s were informal events in the western United States and northern Mexico with cowboys and vaqueros testing their work skills against one another.

Early rodeo competitions emerged with the first held in Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1872, but Prescott, Arizona claims the distinction of holding the first professional rodeo when it charged admission and awarded trophies in 1888.
