The neck injury initially occurred when he made a block in a game against the Atlanta Falcons in the next to last regular season game in 1994. Sharpe played through it but was reinjured on a tackle in the next game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tests showed damage to the first two vertebrae in his neck and he had surgery in January, 1995 to fuse those two vertebrae together. The Tampa Bay game was the last of his career.
