In soccer, a direct free kick is a restart awarded by the referee after a foul has occurred. The ball is placed on the ground at the spot of the foul, and the kicking team may kick it, at which time the ball is in play. All defenders must remain at least 10 yards from the ball until it is kicked and moves.

The referee signals the start of the game by blowing his whistle, as he must do before each and every kick-off. There is no further signal that is required, nor typically performed. Some few referees will raise an arm in the direction of the kicker's attack, and others mightgesture toward the center mark, but these are non-standard and unnecessary.

The signal is a 45 degree hand raise in the direction of the free kick, followed by holding the arm straight up. The ref doesn't put his arm down until the ball has touched the 2nd player.

He would raise his right arm in the air, directly above his head. He would then drop his arm to normal position once another player has made contact with the ball.

The referee ends the match by pointing to the center circle while blowing his whistle. The referee may then elect to verbally announce "Full Time"; however, this is not required.

Why do parents disrespect referees at youth soccer games?

Sometimes, parents will go nuts, and it can make them say disrespectful things to referee when the game isn't going the way it should. Remember to always respect the referee whether you are a player, spectator, or coach. They have a tough and hard job and can't referee the game perfectly. Give referees breathing room, or in other words, treat people the way you want to be treated.
