It depends on the level of play. If the coach is coaching a recreation team, the background isn't a big deal, however if the coach is scouting players for a traveling competitive team background info is sometimes helpful.

Most coaches want to know how many years the players have played and at what position. It is also helpful to know which team they were previously a part of to determine what commitment and level of play the player is used to.
