Well, he did come from a poor background in the island of Madeira, Portugal. He has been very dedicated to training since young. When he turned 14 or 15 he moved to the mainland to join the football academy of Sporting Lisbon (paid by the club). From there on he practiced a lot and just got better and better, started playing for the main team and after some time was sold to Manchester United.
The thing is, everyone who grew up with him or lived in the academy says he was the most dedicated player they have seen. When the other kids went to sleep he would keep practicing till the high hours of the night, and would wake up earlier to do the same.

Which Ronaldo? Cristiano Ronaldo? Ronaldinho? The other Brazilian ronaldo? I'll assume you mean Cristiano. He kicks it with the top of his foot. With the laces. His technique is unique because he pulls his kicks in a "swiping" motion making spectacular curls. Like the one against Portsmouth. Go on YouTube and look for "Cristiano Ronaldo freekick vs Portsmouth"
On the 31st August 2008, Manchester City was rumoured to have made a 150million pound bid for Cristiano Ronaldo although it was rejected. That would probably make him worth the most in world football today if clubs are playing amounts like that for him.
Currently at Real Madrid Cristiano Ronaldo is making around 7-10 million euro's in American that's about 13-15 million dollars taking an offhand guess but yeah in the area of 10 million units of pay.
